James Otis, March 12, 1910." James Otis Kaler (1848-1912) was an American journalist and author of children’s literature. He wrote under the name James Otis. In 1880 he wrote his first, and still most famous children’s book (largely by way of a filmed version by Walt Disney, “Toby Tyler; Or, Ten Weeks With A Circus”- a story about an orphan who runs away to join the circus.
