BAKER, Karle Wilson. DREAMERS ON HORSEBACK. Dallas, Texas: Southwest Press, [1931]. Small 8vo., green cloth spine & black board printed with a modern, abstract design; 195 pages. First Edition. Baker [1878-1960] was a contributor to many popular magazines during her writing career and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in poetry for this book, her last. She was known as one of Texas' most talented writer, lived in Nacogdoches, and taught at the Stephen F. Austin University there. Signed presentation from Baker, to author Margaret Deland, on the front endpaper: "For Margaret Deland from Karle Wilson Baker. Christmas, 1931." Also laid in is an inscribed Christmas card from Baker to Deland: "For Margaret Deland, from Karle Wilson Baker, the dilatory but devoted- for of course I've known you a long time from your works. Nacogdoches, 1931." Correspondence between Baker and Deland is housed at the Stephen F. Austin University. Deland [1857-1945] was a popular author, short-story writer, and poet who lived in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area- a setting she frequently used in her works. A nice association copy!
