Signed on the front endpaper: "Marian Helen Roth, Los Angeles, California. June 1913." Marian Helen Roth was the wife of Abe Roth, a boxing referee during the Golden Age of Boxing. He refereed from the 1920's to 1950's. He appeared in six Hollywood movies playing the part of a boxing referee: "Jealousy" 1934; "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" 1941; "Swing Fever" 1943; "Bride for Sales" 1949; "The Harder They Fall" 1956; and then in 1950 he played himself as a professional boxing referee in: "You Bet Your Life." Roth was a colorful individual who socialized and was friends with many famous people in Hollywood and the boxing business. He hung around with the Holmby Hills Rat Pack, which included Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracy, Frank Sinatra, Leo Durocher, Laura Bacall and Judy Garland. He was friends with Jack Dempsey and Max Baer. He apparently liked to gamble and hung out with Jimmy Durante at Del Mar Race Track. He and Marian Helen lived on Marilyn Drive in Beverly Hills.
