NY: D. Appleton & Company, 1933. First edition, second printing. Signed presentation from Mitchell on the title page: “For Madame H. Golotin with warm admiration for gallant France, this little story of the Santa Clara Valley, and happy memories of our meeting. Ruth Comfort Mitchell, San Jose, May 5th 1945.” Ruth Comfort Mitchell Young wrote novels, poems, short stories, and plays and was married to California GOP State Senator Sanborn Young. A stalwart Republican, Mitchell made speeches against John Steinbeck and his novel “The Grapes of Wrath” and penned her own novel “Of Human Kindness”- a whitewash of California agricultural practices in 1940. Aid in is a snapshot photograph of Mitchell seated at a desk (dated June 2, 1931) and another photograph of a studio, perhaps in Los Gatos where she lived (dated Dec. 18, 1939). Small 8vo., dark-green cloth, stamped in gilt, in original dust jacket; 302 pages. Item #57160
Very Good (covers nice & bright; contents clean & tight with minor browning pp.106/107 from the photographs being laid in); little edgewear (tiny nicks, few short tears with internal repairs using clear, archival tape; price-clipped) d/j. Overall, a nice copy!
