Effie Scott, who attended the University of Kansas, met her future husband there- Edward Curtis Franklin [1862-1927], who taught chemistry at Stanford University and was president of the American Chemical Society in 1923, the first from Stanford. He grew up in Kansas and got his degrees in chemistry at Kansas University. Both Effie and Edward were good friends of William Allen White, another famous Kansan. Eugene Fitch Ware [1841-1911], also known as "Ironquill," is a Kansas author and poet. He came to Kansas after serving in the Union Army and editing an Iowa Newspaper. He settled at Ft. Scott, studied law and later became a specialist in the fields of water rights and insurance law.
