NY: Twayne Publishers, . Illustrated. First Edition. Review Copy with letter from the publisher containing promotional commentary and offering to send review copies. Wonderful signed presentation from Elegant on the front endpaper: “To Prof. Bodde, who introduced me to the field. With gratitude, Robert S. Elegant.” Author’s uncommon first book. Robert Sampson Elegant is a British-American author and journalist. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (where Bodde was his professor), he spent many years in Asia as a journalist and briefed Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger repeatedly on Asia, China and Vietnam. Derk Bodde [1909–2003] was an American sinologist and historian of China, known for his pioneering work on the history of the Chinese legal system. He spent several decades as Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and was a president of the American Oriental Society (1968–69). He was the first American recipient of a one-year fellowship under the Fulbright Scholarship program, which he spent studying in Beijing. A very nice association copy from Elegant to his first mentor on Asia. This book is an early study of biographical and then-scarce information on important Chinese leaders, with a collection of unusual photographs. 8vo., beige cloth, stamped in red stars, in (fragile) original dust jacket; 264 pages. Item #57230
Very Good (covers nice; contents clean & tight); several tears (with internal mends using clear archival tape) & some shallow chipping to the very fragile dust jacket.
