Halleck regrets he cannot attend a dinner: "Dear Mrs. Fairfield, I deeply regret that my engagements for today and tomorrow deny me the honor of availing myself of your invitation to dinner but I hope this evening to find time to call upon you, and have the pleasure of expressing my thanks for your courtesy. With the greatest respect, Your obt. servt., F.G. Halleck." Halleck's verses carried early homosexual themes and his love for another man, American author Joseph Rodman Drake, would be fictionalized in Bayard Taylor's novel "Joseph And His Friend"- a century before the Stonewall Riots. $125.00.
