Birmenmayer was Associate Professor of Slavic Languages at Penn State University. Signed presentation from Birkenmayer on the title page, to his superior: "To Joe Paternost with best wishes! Sigmund Birkenmayer." Paternost was Professor Emeritus of Slavic Languages at Penn State.
