Philbrick was a Boston advertising executive who infiltrated the U.S. Communist party on behalf of the FBI in the 1940s and this is his story. Also the basis for a television series of the same name that ran from 1953 to 1956, with Richard Carlson playing Philbrick. The series lasted for 117 episodes with Philbrick narrating each one. All scripts were approved by J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI but many episodes has little to do with Philbrick's actual experiences. The show was a favorite with assassin Lee Harvey Oswald when he was a teenager. Signed presentation from Philbrick on the front endpaper: "Many thanks to Adelaide Kowalsky, Herbert A.
