Jean King was the sixth- and first woman- Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii from 1978 to 1982 in the administration of Governor of Hawaii George Ariyoshi. She also served in the state House of Representatives (1972-1974) and in the state Senate (1974-1978), where she was known for pushing forward environmental legislation. In 1982 King was defeated in the Democratic Party primary in an attempted run for governor. She then retired from politics. John Dominis Holt, King's husband, wrote the foreword.
