This title was first published as a Gold Medal paperback in 1952. The true personal account of the author's experiences in several Federal prisons at the outset of World War II. Viereck offers a straight forward and detailed account of what he encountered there. "How else could I have met so many murderers, thugs, forgers, thieves, rapists, pimps, male prostitutes, drug addicts, and dipsomaniacs on terms of complete social inequality?" Frontispiece plus four other full-page, well-executed fantasy type illustrations. Woodcut black & white chapter heads- some erotic themed. Includes 10 pages of "Rhymed Reminiscences" and two pages on "Men Without Women"- a review on sexual aberrations in prison by two noted sexologists. Viereck was a Nazi sympathizer indicted for a violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (an anti-propaganda bill) in 1941, and was imprisoned from 1942 to 1947. Viereck was a fairly well-known poet in his day and was a friend of Nikola Tesla. His father, Peter Viereck, was an accomplished, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet.
