LYTTON, Edward Robert Bulwer. [First Earl of Lytton; wrote under the pen name Owen Meredith]. Autograph Letter Signed. Four pages on a single folded sheet of stationery, dated Knebworth, September 16, 1883: "Dear Sir, Amongst you have been so good as to send me, on the application made through Mr. Charles Kent, in the 3d vol of the Newgate Calendar which I return herewith. In does not contain the case I want to refer to- which is that of Fontleroy the Banker who was hanged for forgery and embezzlement. I am unable to say what was the date of his execution, but think it must have been in quite the latter half of the 18th or the first half of the 19th Cents. The volume you have send me mentions the case of the banker's Clerk named Foulon hanged for forgery also but this is a different case. Could you oblige me by seeing if the case of Fontleroy is not to be found in some other volume of the Newgate Calendar- which must I should think contain an acct. of it, as it made a great sensation at the time. I sent you last week through Mr. Kent my subscription to the London Library as a Life member. Will you kindly acknowledge..., Yours & obliged, Lytton." Very Good (some fading to the last few lines & signature). $375.00.
