Ernest C. Pollard [1906-1974] did much of his work at Yale University, where he designed the university's first atom-smashing cyclotron in 1939. He was among the scientists who made the first determination of the radius of a nucleus. Signed inscription by Pollard on the title page: "With best wishes, Ernest Pollard." With the ink name of nuclear physicist G. Norris Glasoe on the front endpaper, dated 10/2/45. Glasoe [1902-1987] was a member of the Columbia University team which was the first in the United States to verify the European discovery on the nuclear fission of uranium via neutron bombardment. He worked at the MIT Radiation Laboratory during World War II and was a physicist and administrator at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. A nice association copy between two prominent nuclear physicists of their day! Very Good (contents clean & tight, little fading spine). $150.00.
