A LITTLE NEW ENGLAND MAID

Lothrop Publishing Company, 1898. Item #3848

WOODS, Kate Tannatt. A LITTLE NEW ENGLAND MAID. A Book For Boys And Girls. Boston: Lothrop Publishing Company, [1898]. Small 8vo., pictorial blue cloth, stamped in gilt, black & orange; 279 pages. First Edition. The author's own personal copy with "Author's Copy, Kate Tannant Woods, May 26th, 1898" on the front endpaper. Woods [1836-1910] was married to George H. Woods, an attorney and officer under Gen. Sherman during the Civil War. She served as a nurse during the war, eventually writing juvenile books to fund the care of her husband, who was severely wounded during the war. Woods was a prolific writer of books for young people but, for whatever reason, her signature and some books, like this one, are uncommon today. A pioneer in the women's rights movement, Woods was a founder and an officer in the General Federation of Women's Clubs. She hosted Swami Vivekananda in her home during his stay in this country in 1893. Very Good (bit of edgewear covers; contents clean & tight with light cracking along rear hinge- but still tight). A one-of-a-kind copy! $350.00.

Price: $350.00
