MR. JACK HAMLIN'S MEDIATION
London: C. Arthur Pearson, 1899. Item #56
HARTE, Bret. MR. JACK HAMLIN'S MEDIATION AND OTHER STORIES. London: C. Arthur Pearson, 1899. 8vo., decorative brown cloth. First English Edition. Signed presentation from Harte on front endpaper: "To Madame Van de Velde, from her friend, Bret Harte. November, 1899." A nice association copy! Harte spent the last twenty years of his life in England, where he met his new agent and a mentor, Hydeline Van de Velde. Mme. Van de Velde was a writer and translated many of Bret Harte’s stories into French. Her influence on Harte was an important aspect in the last twenty years of his life. He died at her country home and she buried him in the churchyard of St. Peter's, Frimley, England. Very Good (bright, but hinges cracked but still tight; and subsequently strengthened, small profession mend front endpaper). Both the front and rear endpapers are of very poor quality paper.
