FIFTY YEARS IN BOTH HEMISPHERES OR, REMINISCENCES OF THE LIFE OF A FORMER MERCHANT

NY: Redfield, 1854. Translated from the German. First American Edition. Adopting New Orleans as his American home, which he defended as a soldier in the Battle of New Orleans, Nolte began thirty-three years of shuttling between New Orleans and the European continent. Although his chief business was cotton speculation, he was early engaged in a gigantic banking scheme to bring silver from Mexico to the United sates and then to ship it to Napoleon. The author spent much time in Mexico and New Orleans, met James Audubon and Henry Clay, reports on the New Madrid earthquake, and was shipwrecked in the Bahamas. he was supposedly the source for Hervey Allen's "Anthony Adverse." 8vo., 12mo., embossed brown cloth with spine stamped in gilt; 484 pages. Item #56073

Very Good (some wear to head of spine, two signatures lightly sprung but still tight; text nice with a couple of tiny puncture marks to the dedication page).

Price: $45.00
