CLIPPED WINGS

Philadelphia: Dorrance And Company, [1943]. First Edition- a scarce war-time publication. A novel about a five-generation family in the little town of Millfork, Ohio. Signed presentation from Harris to a relative on the front endpaper: “To Janie, By & from the author, Mrs. Adah Glasener Harris.” Also, with a lengthy, informative three-page autographed letter signed from Harris, dated “7-3-48. Dayton, Ohio” to “Dear Jane.” To a newfound relative who is interested in their family tree. Harris mentions writing this book “a year or so before I had the stroke. That did me and I haven’t used the typewriter since.” She gave it to a grandchild. The letter details the writing of the book, which was completed a week before Pearl Harbor. In the letter, Harris discusses who various characters are based on and how they are related, plus other general book information. “I sold a few hundred copies of it [the book] but I think I had concealed my real motive in writing it. Pensions.” “Will tell you the main character is a distant cousin of mine that married a Dr. in Canton, O. Both died long ago, but she was very pretty.” A fascinating letter giving important information on the writing of this scarce book! The letter is in an envelope tipped to the rear endpaper, with the letterhead of “Mrs. J.E. Harris, Dayton, Ohio.” Wonderful biographical information!
