Signed presentation from Wang Xi on the front endpaper: "For Professor William R. Braisted with warm regards, XiWang. Jan. 16,1987.” William R. Braisted was a Professor Emeritus of History history at the University of Texas at Austin from 1942 until 1988, writing three books on the role of the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. In “Diplomats In Blue: U.S. Naval Officers in China, 1922-1933.), Braisted depicts a bygone world in which admirals played almost as important a role as ambassadors in representing American interests abroad. He looked to foster a stronger, more unified China that might be a better ally of the United States. When he was young, he lived in the Philippines, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Chefoo, China.
