Ciardi writes about careful foot-washing in a way that renders it as completely natural, taking no effort at all to carry out. More than an arbitrary procedure, the process of checking for athlete’s foot, and applying the cream, rubbing alcohol powder composes a system that the author controls and maintains, but he ends up lamenting the fact he is now old and too fat to treat his feet properly.
