Signed presentation from Jean Elvis (to whom the book is dedicated) on the front endpaper: “For Ken in memory of a nice Sunday afternoon. Jean Elis. Austin, Texas. Aug. 29, 1948.” An account by Mattie Payne Blank, widow of a Californian physician, who drove her car across America several times, accompanied by a realistic dummy she created and named Colonel Pottesby. The colonel, which she created out of a Halloween mask and a hat and a suit, proved to be a perfect protection against hitchhikers and suspicious characters. The books cites various adventures of Blank across the country, including visits to Indian reservations and southern plantations.
