HUGHES, Thomas. Autograph Manuscript Signed. Hughes has hand-written a 16-line poem by James Russell Lowell on a 5-inch by 8-inch sheet of light-blue paper. Signed by Hughes at the conclusion and dated "Blankenberghe, August 14th, 1866." The author of "Tom Brown's School Days" was an admirer of Lowell and traveled to the United States in 1870 with the primary purpose of meeting the American poet. The poem begins "O strange new land that yet wast never young, Whose youth from thee by griping need was wrung..." Nicely matted and framed with a 19th-century steel engraving of Hughes. Little toning to the letter. A unique item! $175.00.
