A nice association copy! Harte spent the last twenty years of his life in England, where he met his new agent and a mentor, Hydeline Van de Velde. Mme. Van de Velde was a writer and translated many of Bret Harte’s stories into French. Her influence on Harte was an important aspect in the last twenty years of his life. He died at her country home and she buried him in the churchyard of St. Peter's, Frimley, England .
