AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED

1958. Item #9756

SINCLAIR, Upton. Autograph Letter Signed. One page on personalized stationery, dated Jan. 11, 1958. To Meet The Press commentator Lawrence E. Spivak: "My Dear Spivak: Thank you for your kind letter. I could not come to N.Y. My wife is a heart patient & I could not leave her. If the program could originate out here, I'd be interested to see your son. Sincerely, Upton Sinclair." With the original envelope addressed to Spivak. Also included is an archive of typed letters totaling about 15 pages, mostly file copies, concerning a proposed interview with Sinclair on Meet The press on the occasion of the author's 80th birthday. Spivak sent his son, Jon, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, based in L.A., to see Sinclair. In a lengthy three-page typed letter from Jon to his father about this meeting, Jon offers some probing comments on meeting Sinclair: "My immediate impression on meeting and talking with Upton Sinclair was one of surprise and disappointment. He seemed old, slow in speech, and somewhat out of touch with the political currents around him... He is a bit rambly and long-winded in his replies, but there is no question that he is alert and perceptive... I believe my greatest disappointment was in Mr. Sinclair as a personality. The obvious answer is that he put his life in his books and I think he feels it." Also included is a first edition copy of Sinclair's pamphlet "I, Governor of California," which has two small staple holes as it was stapled together with the correspondence. The lot: $250.00.

Price: $250.00
